WALKING AS A RESEARCH METHOD

workshop
september 2025
▹ centre for research architecture, goldsmiths, university of london

walking as a research method constituted part of the public programme of the exhibition reverberations, in which re-weaving social fabric was shown. the workshop was designed alongside researchers riccardo rizzetto and jaya mirani, with guest joão prates ruivo. it consisted of a two-hour collective activation in deptford exploring walking as a situated method of research.

the workshop aimed to highlight how walking can function as both methodology and archive: an embodied way of gathering stories and counter-narrating, registering atmospheres, and thinking through spatial politics.

starting from 20 wharf street and moving towards deptford town hall, participants were invited to observe and document the subtle traces left in the urban fabric, from material infrastructures to overlooked residues, as evidence of gentrification and other spatial transformations.

each steward brought their own research lens and methods. participants were given a small cardboard loom to enable them to experiment with the weave-walk method.
