TRACING BODIES || TRAZANDO CUERPOS
installation
2023
la casa erosionada, anahuacalli museum, méxico city
tracing bodies || cuerpos trazados is an installation of seven textile sculptures that examine what it means to be present in one’s body. They honour this embodied experience in domestic and communal spaces, recalling everyday acts such as hanging clothes on a shared washing line or putting up festive decorations in a public square.
the installation explores the concept of embodiment, drawing inspiration from the the temple (2021) , tracing spaces (2021), and a nomadic residency around michoacan (méxico) organised by david jonathan romero. it represents a wish for scarred bodies to be celebrated in communion, using the soft flow of translucent fabric disrupted by embroidered marks to mirror how experiences leave indelible traces on the body.
the resulting textile pieces were created using organza, a material typically reserved for celebration dresses. the creative process channels intense emotions through ripping, shredding, and cutting the fabric. these dismembered fragments are sewn back together, often strained and severed once more, before being secured with solid, scar-like bindings. this intentional distortion forces the reassembled fabric to find new, unpredictable ways of flowing.
tracing bodies II cuerpos trazados was selected by curator karla niño de rivera to be included in the show la casa erosionada, which was open to the public from 29 july 2023 until 8 october 2023.
la casa erosionada was the first group show at the anahuacalli museum in more than a decade. the exhibition presented more than 50 works by 24 artists that address themes such as: the construction of identity, intergenerational healing, the exploration of emotional fluctuations, family cognitive dissonances, the complexities of lineage and the construction of a safe place, a home.
